 Men's Mission Trip to Mississippi

Hurricane Relief

November 2005

OUR MISSISSIPPI MISSION TRIP

On November 9-12, a group of men from Meansville Baptist Church journeyed to Pearl River County, Mississippi, to assist with the cleanup for Hurricane Katrina.    Pearl River County is around 20 miles inland from Waveland, Mississippi, one of the towns hardest hit by Katrina, and 50  miles northeast of New Orleans.  Those who made the trip were Rev. Allen Newman, Jim Crayton, Mike Johnson, Joe Mangham, Lee Milby, Joe Pittman, and Leonard Shirley.

We drove down Wednesday, worked Thursday and Friday, and drove home on Saturday.  Our projects were assigned by the Pearl River Baptist Association.  We worked mainly in the vicinity of Picayune, clearing yards, felling hazardous trees, and clearing and repairing fences.

Everyone on the trip was humbled by the amount of damage.  In spite of the devastation, we were surprised by the spirit of the people, and how much daily activities seemed to have returned to normal.  We encountered church groups from all over the United States who had also come to help with the hurricane recovery.

Meansville Baptist should be proud of the work their men did and the spirit with which they worked together.  While our contribution was small, we considered the opportunity to serve a blessing.  With all the work that remains to be done, we hope to be able to return in the spring.
